Allegan County Location Map

Allegan County is located in the southwest part of Lower Michigan along the Great Lakes. It is approximately 827 square miles with 25 miles of Lake Michigan coastline. It is the 18th largest county in Michigan and has 24 townships, eight cities and two villages. The County is still largely rural in nature and still maintains an agriculture- and tourist-based economy, however trends are toward more light industry and technology which has translated into Allegan County being in one of the fastest growing regions of the state.

Allegan County is conveniently and centrally located in the heart of West Michigan. Uniquely positioned in the midst of several medium- and larger-sized cities, Allegan County is both close to everything yet offers plenty of space to live, work and play. With two major freeways and an Amtrak passenger rail line traversing the County, the metropolitan areas of Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo are within a few minutes travel time. Major cities like Chicago and Detroit are within 2-1/2 hours. International and regional airports are located within and just outside of the County as well.

The County can effectively be split into three general "areas": the lakeshore area, the state game area and rolling inland hills of the eastern half of the county. The Lakeshore area consists of the westernmost four townships and the beach communities of Saugatuck and Douglas. While some agriculture is present, this area is largely focused on recreation and tourism and is also where many Michigan, Indiana and Chicago families have vacation homes. Moving inland a bit from Lake Michigan, the Allegan State Game Area is a 50,000-acre swath of state recreation land which remains largely forested. This area boasts countless recreational opportunities, such as hunting, camping, hiking, cross-country skiing, equestrain trail riding, and fishing to name a few. The remainder of Allegan County consists of gently rolling countryside home to numerous farms and rural residental opportunities, although recreation still plays a key role as well.
